What if you could instantly look taller with nothing more than the clothes in your closet – and no need for six-inch platform heels! We invited Annie Ladino, fashion editor and chief stylist for Shop It To Me for her top style tips to make anyone – at any height – appear taller and slimmer.
We featured three models of varying heights – 5’1’’, 5’4’’ and 5’8”.
For women in the short category, 5’3” or shorter, Annie offers the following head-to-toe advice:
Opt for a Hidden Platform Pump: Heels are a no brainer to make one seem taller, but chunky shoes actually make you look out of proportion. Instead, a covered platform shoe where the extra height in the shoe isn’t as obvious.
Stick to One Color: Monochromatic outfits where there are no visible breaks in the front of the outfit can make you appear taller. Our model wore a maroon top and maroon skirt, which actually appeared as one long dress.
Keep It Proportional: Stick with knee length skirts and bottoms with high waists, which can create a flattering silhouette, says Ladino. Contrary to belief, mini skirts can actually make some women look shorter.
For those in the medium height category, between 5’4” and 5’7,” here are Annie suggests the following style tips:
Invest in Nude Heels: This is always a smart choice for all women as it’s “universally flattering,” says Annie, especially on medium height women.
Choose Crop Tops & V-Necks: These shirt styles create illusions of length, says Annie. Stay away from boxy clothes and too much layering, which can be overwhelming.
Finally, for tall women measuring 5’8” and taller, Annie says:
Balance Out Your Height: “Tall girls should embrace their height…but can sometimes appear too overwhelming,” says Annie. Her advice: Break up your outfit with wide belts, long necklaces and larger bags.
Tailor It: Proper fitting clothes are important. Find brands with pants that have long hemlines and shirts that fit your arm length. If they’re hard to find, invest in good tailoring.
